I have not been out along this 43KM straight road towards Tulbagh in years. I have fond childhood memories of driving through on the way to Ceres and having huge anticipation of seeing snow. Sadly around this time of year the mountain peaks should be capped and the rain pouring, however on this 31 degree (celsius) day in May we are out soaking up the sun in the gorgeous countryside.
Waverley Hills Estate is situated between Tulbagh and Ceres and are famous for their green footprint. Organic wines are their speciality and they strongly believe it is what sets them apart and protects the surrounding environment.

In a relaxing environment you are free to choose the wines you wish to taste at your leisure and are also not limited to the amount you would like to select. With the quintessential flavour and taste notes made and our favourite wines selected we could pair it with our Sunday lunch. So off we went to the restaurant.
The Waverley Hills restaurant is open six days a week for breakfast and lunch, and twice for dinners on Wednesday and Friday evenings. Its wrap-around balcony affords striking views of the valley, while the twin fireplaces make it a cosy retreat when the weather turns cold.
Chef Francois du Toit has turned the venue into a popular destination where the menu changes seasonally according to ingredients available. The restaurant caters for weddings and function as well as groups making use of its conference room.
The spacious venue is perfect for Weddings and can seat up to 120 people with a large dancing floor for you to get down and boogie. The estate also has a chapel below the restaurant which allows you to have the entire ceremony on the premises.
After a full tasting, it was definitely time for lunch and what better then Chef Francois du Toit’s truly spectacular menu. “Plaas Kos” is the affectionate colloquial term for traditional farm food in the Western Cape region and it is pure comfort on a plate with hearty childhood classics.
The specials board highlights Chef Francois weekly creations that is sure to be inspired by the local products and fresh produce that is on offer in this spectacular part of the country. Having previously run the kitchen at Manna Epicure at the top of Kloof street his menu is exuberant with well-known city spins on the usual.
Smoked yoghurt, burnt lime jus, crispy fried ginger, pickled cucumbers etc are just some of the superlative menu items.
A completely unpretentious menu with less than 8 starters and 10 main meals, meant that it was uncomplicated and the Chef and his team have perfected each item n the menu instead of over complicating it.
Chef Francois is definitely a top contender for future awards and accolades as I had to stop myself from licking each plate!

– Puffed Rice Crumbed Prawns, Orange Segments, Sherry Soy Jelly and a Ponzu Dressing –
– Vegetable curry with seasonal vegetables and a smoked yoghurt dressing –
For Main Course:
– Roast pork belly, apple sage chutney, potato confit, chorizo jus, cumin carrots –
– Slow roasted Lamb Shank with a thick jus, seasonal vegetables and creamy mashed potatoes –
– Date pudding with carrot cake ice-cream (AMAZING!!!!!)
– Gooey Chocolate brownie with a toasted peanut ice cream
– A selection of the homemade ice-creams (Carrot cake, Banana and toffee and peanut)
Breakfast & Lunch: Tuesday – Saturday: 10.00 – 16.00 & Sunday: 11.00 – 15.00
Dinner: Wednesday: 18:30 – 22:00 & Friday: 18.30 – 22.00
There is also a jungle gym on the lawn for the kiddies to enjoy.
One of the most inspired meals I have had in a long time, not only was it nostalgic and comforting but it ticked so many of the flavour boxes. Waverley is definitely worth the drive to enjoy everything this amazing premises has to offer.
