A modern and upbeat interior offers a warm atmosphere that is comfortable and approachable. Marble and wooden tables with chic lighting and interesting art pieces that line the interior. With a crete washed floor and detailed artistic painted walls, there is nothing MESSy about the interior.
The Mess hosted a gorgeous media lunch for a group of very keen and hungry foodies that were so excited to enjoy a slice of heaven. And it definitely didn’t disappoint. The menu was filled with a variety of unfamiliar flavours and perfect pairings that guests can expect when visiting. This venue is proving to be the perfect place for intimate parties, date nights or girls lunches that turns into pre-dinner drinks before sampling a few of the platters and their dessert menu.
A sophisticated setting is the brain child of first time restaurateur owner Carlene de Gouviea who has partnered with consulting chef Luke Wonnacottand to create the perfect fusion of Middle Eastern cuisine and European flair that is the perfect protege cuisine for this space and what Cape Town has been missing.
Various countries in Europe are well known for their sharing style type platters that have been adapted in this Cape Town Restaurant. Spain, Greece, France, Turkey and some parts of Italy have perfected this style of eating, throw in a Middle Eastern Flair with a touch or Oriental and you have a MESSy situation…well not really…more like and then BOOM you have The Mess.
Why have a boring side salad when you can have trendy baked kale chips served with Saldanha Bay oysters, confit pork belly and/or a selection of dips and flat breads to start before the very tempting main meals.
The only reason I can think of you why this concept of sharing works is because it is very hard to commit to just one meal without trying two or three at once, so I dont blame you for bringing a few friends to have as your cover.

These are a few of the dishes I got a chance to photograph before diving in but one word comes to mind about these ribs…WOW, YUM, AMAZING…okay I couldn’t choose just one word. The menu is inspired by many travels abroad by Carlene and her husband and their years in the wine industry. Food for thought. Each dish has a new spin on a classic and it gives the Mess so much character. Chef Luke Wonnacottand translated this vision into a tangible dream written across the pages of the menu.
I have never really been a huge dessert person, but when this steaming hot molten chocolate centered pot came out to our table…I was sold! Its hard to go to a restaurant and feel surprised by a chocolate fondant, however this one had a surprising element, the white chocolate and lime ice-cream. Yes, thats right! It was incredibly fresh and zesty and was the perfect finale to an incredible show of the new worlds cuisine. Cheers! I hope that when you are stuck thinking about a venue for date night, girls get together, boys night or a family dinner…this is the perfect location. If ever the concept of breaking bread together was put into action, it would be at the Mess. Enjoy a meal together with those close to you.
