Coffee, ahhh…the blissful word that perks everyone up in the mornings. The fragrant ground bean that is responsible for productive meetings, faces that finally feel ready to take on the day and the best accompaniment to many deliciously indulgent freshly baked pastries. One of the gems of Franschhoek is the Big Dog Cafe which is home to the family run Terbodore Coffee Roasters.
As we drove into Franschhoek for a special two days exploring you could almost smell the coffee aromas wafting to the main road and inviting us inside.
Baristas surrounded by steam, waitresses jotting down coffee orders, fresh beans grinding, the kitchen buzzing with the end of the breakfast shift…there is definitely an infectious vibe that makes you feel right at home.
The exposed brick walls, large green plants and wooden surfaces make you feel as though you are sitting in a popular New York coffee shop, without the awkward sharing of the last seat and screaming your misspelt name to collect your coffee order.
The charming interior really offers you a place to relax and enjoy all the speciality items on the menu.
In 2011, Michael Macaskill decided to venture outside of his mothers initial establishment in KZN and decided that Franschhoek would be a great spot to set up shop. Today he is at the forefront of hands on service with a smile. Whether it’s the regular customers (spotted wearing the merchandise below) enjoying their daily coffee, the coffee snobs or the out of town-ers looking for a morning caffeine hit before the day ahead, anyone is made to feel equally as welcome.
Grab a local newspaper, catch up on the events of the day in this charming town while you wait for your expertly made coffee…
Whether its the classic flat white, the decadently creamy cappuccino, ultra chic double expresso or one of Terbadore’s classic flavoured coffees…you are spoilt for choice. If you prefer an alternative milk they are more than accommodating.
Big Dog Cafe is named after the notoriously big great dane mascot from the Terbodore coffee brand seen on all the coffee bags and merchandise. The cafe offers an inspired menu filled with well loved classics and a few newly invented flavours that any self professed foodie would enjoy.
These are the warm ricotta hotcakes served with a berry ice cream and seasonal berries…it was absolutely delicious! A definitely must-try when you visit.
